From My Life to Yours ~ Let's Build Some Bridges!

Here are some of my thoughts about this holiday and what it means to us as Jews living in today’s world.  (Also food for thought to those who don’t celebrate.)  Let me know what you think and chag sameach, world!

Andrea I want to thank you so much for this. I recently read a blog post about the California Christmas Jews and it made me sad. Here I am trying to separate myself from the my past, so that the practices that I engage in, those that are uniquely Jewish will have the opportunity to resonate within me.

I will admit that I have stumbled into this gift giving, purchasing some small items for my son out of my excitement to have him celebrating with me – but none have been more than a few dollars. I think that next year I will avoid the practice all together. It just does not make any sense in my heart to celebrate a holiday to remember the triumph of the Jews over those who wanted them to assimilate by… assimilating.

    • Beautifully said. I also have so many conflicted feelings at this time of year, because gift giving can be wonderful and everyone around me is getting into the holiday spirit. I just try to keep in mind that whereas on Purim we give gifts because we are celebrating the physical, on this holiday we are celebrating the spiritual and should therefore give each other perhaps a gift of time, effot, or emotional support. What do you think of that idea? Thank you for sharing!

I don’t know how I got this on the wrong thread! LOL

I love the idea of giving time effort and support – really love it.

I am working on a post about my personal experience with miracles (big and small) and how those experiences affect me as I celebrate Hanukkah for the first time. I hope you will like it.

      • I can’t wait to read it!
